The Hardest Moments in Veterinary Medicine May Finally Have Their Own Specialty

There is a part of veterinary medicine that every practitioner knows intimately but that has never had a formal home. It lives in the conversations held in quiet exam rooms, in the decisions made when diagnostics have done all they can do, in the care given to a patient and a family when the goal is no longer a cure. That part of the profession may be about to change.

The American Board of Veterinary Specialties is currently seeking public comment on a proposal to recognize the American College of Veterinary Hospice and Palliative Medicine as an official veterinary specialty organization. If approved, it would become one of the most meaningful additions to the specialty landscape in years.

The ACVHPM describes its mission as representing "a distinct and essential discipline within veterinary medicine," one dedicated to advancing care for animals living with terminal, chronic, and progressive conditions. The emphasis is not on diagnosis or cure but on dignity, comfort, and the prevention of suffering. It is, as they put it, a whole-patient, whole-caregiver approach that respects the values and goals of the families walking through the door.

For the veterinarians and technicians who have been doing this work for years without a formal framework, a board certification, or a specialty to call their own, this recognition would be long overdue.
