Leishmania infantum causes visceral leishmaniasis (VL) in humans and is a zoonotic disease with dogs as the primary domestic reservoir. Classically, transmission happens through sandfly vectors, Phlebotomus in the Mediterranean basin, Lutzomyia in Central and South America.
