Vet School After Dark: Vet Candy Launches a New Podcast Created by Veterinary Students

Nobody teaches you how to survive vet school. Vet school teaches you how to diagnose disease, read lab work, and get through anatomy without losing your mind. But the rest of it, the loans, the loneliness, the 11 p.m. group chat that turns into a therapy session, you figure that out on your own.

That is the gap Vet School After Dark is built to fill. It is Vet Candy's newest podcast, and it is hosted entirely by veterinary students: Jean Carlos Alvarado Colon from Colorado State University, Jeremiah Pouncy from Cornell University, Kennedi Robinson from Purdue University, Jess Michell from The Ohio State University, and Emese Avdeyenkova from Rowan University. Some Vet Candy readers will recognize them already; all five have been featured in our student spotlights. Now they are taking over the mic.

This is not a study tips podcast. It is the conversation students are already having, just recorded.

The Stuff Nobody Puts on the Syllabus

Becoming a veterinarian is one of the most rewarding paths a person can choose, and also one of the hardest to talk about honestly. There is the number on your loan statement that never seems to stop climbing. There is skipping meals because the day did not leave room for one. There is trying to keep a relationship alive across time zones, or watching friendships quietly change shape once vet school swallows your schedule whole. There is the impossible math of fitting sleep, exercise, and a decent dinner into the same week, let alone the same day.

And there is the quieter stuff: the comparison, the money stress, the loneliness that can sneak up on you even in a room full of classmates, the sense that everyone else has this figured out.

They do not. Vet School After Dark says so out loud.

Five Schools, Five Very Different Takes

What sets the show apart is where the conversation is coming from. Alvarado Colon, Pouncy, Robinson, Michell, and Avdeyenkova are not outside observers explaining vet school to students. They are living it, at five different schools, in five different corners of the country, at five different points in their own lives. So do not expect one tidy answer to any of it.

One of them might have a money system that actually works. Another is still figuring it out in real time. One might swear by long distance relationships. Another thinks the whole idea sounds like a bad plan. That disagreement is the point. It is what happens when honest conversation gets to be, well, honest.

At its core, Vet School After Dark is about making vet school feel less lonely. There will be real conversations about debt, food insecurity, and mental health, the pressures that come with training for this profession right now. And there will be plenty of the other stuff too: dating, friendship, embarrassing stories, career dreams, questionable decisions, small wins, and whatever chaos happens when five exhausted vet students get talking.

Because becoming a veterinarian was never just about learning medicine. It is also about figuring out who you are while you do it.
