Australia Braces for Bird Flu Crisis as Scientists Warn of Mass Wildlife Deaths

Australia has spent years watching highly pathogenic avian influenza devastate wildlife across Europe, North and South America, Africa, and Antarctica.
Now, scientists say Australia's turn has arrived.
Researchers are warning that the country could experience widespread bird deaths and even population declines in some native species after the arrival of the H5N1 2.3.4.4b strain of avian influenza, a virus that has already killed millions of wild birds and marine mammals around the globe.
The warning follows the recent detection of the virus in migratory seabirds that likely carried the disease to Australia from breeding grounds in the subantarctic, ending years of preparation for what many experts believed was inevitable.
According to reporting by The Guardian, researchers who have spent years studying international outbreaks say Australia should prepare for significant mortality events similar to those seen overseas.
Lessons From Europe
The devastation caused by H5N1 has already reshaped seabird colonies across Europe.
One of the hardest-hit species has been the sandwich tern, a close relative of Australia's greater crested tern.
During major outbreaks in 2022, tens of thousands of birds died as the virus swept through breeding colonies. Neurological disease caused infected birds to lose coordination, twist their necks in a behavior known as "stargazing," and collapse before death.
Professor James Pearce-Higgins of the British Trust for Ornithology described witnessing entire colonies unravel as healthy birds interacted with dying adults and orphaned chicks continued begging for food from parents that would never recover.
Those scenes may offer a glimpse of what could soon occur in Australia.
Hundreds of Species Could Be Vulnerable
Australian government analysis released this week suggests nearly 400 species of birds and mammals could face a high or very high risk if exposed to H5N1.
Researchers expect the virus to spread rapidly across the continent over the coming months.
One of Australia's greatest conservation strengths may also become one of its greatest vulnerabilities.
Nearly half of the country's bird species occur nowhere else on Earth.
That means severe outbreaks could threaten species found only in Australia, raising concerns not only about local population declines but also the potential for global extinctions if particularly vulnerable endemic species are heavily affected.
Waterbirds May Face the Greatest Risk
Scientists have developed predictive models using thousands of international outbreak reports submitted to the World Organisation for Animal Health.
Those models suggest several groups of birds are especially vulnerable, including gannets, boobies, cranes, darters, ducks, geese, swans, gulls, pelicans, terns, cormorants, falcons, kestrels, ravens, and crows.
Many of these species spend time in large breeding colonies or around wetlands where influenza viruses can survive in water for extended periods.
High-density nesting colonies create ideal conditions for rapid transmission once the virus arrives.
Marine Mammals Could Be Hit Just as Hard
Birds are not the only concern.
Around the world, H5N1 has caused catastrophic die-offs among seals and sea lions.
Tens of thousands of marine mammals have died during outbreaks in South America, and more recently the virus reached Australia's remote Heard and McDonald Islands.
Australia's own marine mammals—including Australian fur seals, New Zealand fur seals, and the endangered Australian sea lion—could face similar threats.
Because seals often haul out in tightly packed colonies and frequently share coastal habitat with infected seabirds, scientists believe they may be particularly susceptible once the virus becomes established.
For endangered Australian sea lions, even relatively small outbreaks could have significant conservation consequences.
Veterinarians Will Play a Critical Role
For veterinarians, H5N1 represents more than a wildlife issue.
Clinicians may increasingly receive reports of sick or dead wild birds, be asked to evaluate pets exposed to wildlife, or assist with surveillance and public education efforts.
Veterinarians should continue reminding clients never to handle sick or dead wild birds without appropriate protection and to report unusual mortality events to local wildlife authorities.
While the current public health risk to people remains low, authorities continue to emphasize that anyone who has direct contact with sick wildlife should follow official guidance and seek medical advice if recommended.
Hope Through Preparation
Although Australia's outlook is concerning, researchers point out that other countries have learned valuable lessons during the past several years.
Rapid surveillance, coordinated responses among wildlife agencies, veterinarians, researchers, conservation organizations, and public health officials have helped identify outbreaks more quickly and guide conservation efforts for vulnerable species.
Scientists stress that Australia still has an opportunity to reduce the impact by detecting outbreaks early, protecting sensitive wildlife populations, and maintaining strong collaboration across government and veterinary sectors.
The virus has already demonstrated its ability to move around the globe.
Now, Australia's challenge is limiting how much damage it leaves behind.
