Your Patient Went Home. Their Heart Didn’t Stop Talking.
Veterinarians spend a lot of time telling clients, “Let’s keep an eye on it.” Sonus Health is giving practices a way to actually do that by extending cardiac monitoring into the home, keeping owners involved and bringing veterinary cardiologists into the picture when something doesn’t look right.
There is a familiar moment that happens in veterinary exam rooms every day. You put your stethoscope on a dog’s chest and listen just a little longer than usual. Maybe there is a soft murmur that wasn’t there last year, the rhythm catches your attention, or this is simply an older patient you have known for years and something sounds a little different. The owner notices the pause and asks the inevitable question: “Should I be worried?” Sometimes the answer is clear and the patient needs an echocardiogram, ECG, or cardiology referral. But plenty of times, the answer is simply that we want to keep an eye on it.
The problem is what happens after that. The dog goes home and returns to sleeping on the couch. The cat heads back to the windowsill. The veterinarian moves on to the next appointment. Unless the owner notices a significant change or the patient returns for another examination, there really isn’t much “keeping an eye on it” happening at all. Veterinary medicine is very good at collecting information when a patient is standing in front of us. We listen to the heart, perform a physical examination, run bloodwork and, when indicated, move on to diagnostics such as radiographs, ECGs or echocardiography. But most patients spend only a tiny fraction of their lives inside a veterinary hospital. Once they walk out the door, we lose much of our ability to know what is happening until the next appointment.
Sonus Health is designed to extend cardiac care into that space between visits. Instead of sending an owner home with instructions to simply watch for changes, the veterinary practice can establish a monitoring schedule and the owner can collect heart recordings at home using something they already own: a smartphone. The real value may not be any single recording. It is what happens when those recordings begin accumulating over weeks and months. A veterinarian no longer has to rely entirely on what the heart sounded like during an annual examination. Instead, the practice has the opportunity to watch for changes between visits and potentially recognize when something is moving in the wrong direction.
For pet owners, this also turns a vague instruction into something tangible. “Watch him and let us know if anything changes” can be a frustrating assignment when the owner doesn’t really know what they are supposed to be watching for. Giving them a simple monitoring schedule creates a specific role in their pet’s care while keeping the veterinarian in charge of the medical plan.
It also reflects a larger change happening throughout medicine. We are moving away from thinking of health as a collection of isolated appointments and toward understanding what happens to patients over time. For cardiac patients in particular, that makes sense. Hearts do not suddenly become abnormal because an appointment happens to be scheduled that morning. Changes develop between visits, and historically, much of that time has been invisible to the veterinary team.
Cats Make a Pretty Good Argument for Doing This at Home
If there is one species that makes the case for home monitoring particularly well, it is the cat. A perfectly relaxed cat can become a completely different patient the second the carrier appears. Add the car ride, waiting room, unfamiliar smells and physical examination, and the heart rate you hear in the hospital may look quite different from what is happening while that same cat is stretched across the sofa at home.
Cats are also exceptionally good at hiding disease. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is the most commonly diagnosed cardiac disease in cats, and some affected animals can have few outward signs, particularly earlier in the disease process. That makes opportunities to collect additional cardiac information especially interesting.
An at-home recording does not replace a veterinary examination or an echocardiogram, nor should it. What it offers is another piece of the clinical picture collected in a completely different environment. The veterinarian gets the examination-room findings, but now there is also the possibility of seeing what is happening when the patient is relaxed and living its normal life.
When Something Looks Off, a Cardiologist Can Take a Look
Of course, collecting more information only matters if there is a useful next step when something doesn't look right. Sonus allows any recording to be escalated for specialist review with one tap. A board-certified veterinary cardiologist evaluates the data and signs a full written report, with Sonus stating that the specialist review is returned within 24 hours.
Importantly, this is not simply an automated alert telling the veterinarian that a recording has been flagged. According to Sonus, specialist reports are read and signed by Diplomates of the ACVIM or ECVIM-CA. The cardiologist provides written assessment and characterization of murmurs and arrhythmias, along with the clinical context of those findings. The report also includes a clinical narrative and recommendations for what may make sense as the next step.
For the general practitioner, that creates an interesting middle ground. A questionable finding does not automatically have to become a full cardiology referral, but it also does not have to sit untouched until the next examination. The veterinarian can escalate the recording, receive specialist input and use that information to determine whether the patient should continue to be monitored, undergo additional diagnostics, or move on to an in-person cardiology evaluation.
It Fills the Space Between the Stethoscope and the Echocardiogram
Cardiac medicine can sometimes feel as though there is a very large jump between hearing something with a stethoscope and pursuing a complete cardiac workup. Sonus potentially adds another layer in that space. A soft murmur can be followed over time. A senior patient can have periodic recordings collected at home. An unusual finding can be sent to a cardiologist for interpretation. If additional diagnostics are recommended, the primary veterinarian now has more information to support that conversation with the client.
That distinction is important because a smartphone recording is not an echocardiogram, and it should not be presented as one. The more interesting question is whether at-home cardiac recordings can help veterinarians identify changes and decide which patients need further investigation. That is a much more practical use of the technology and one that fits naturally into the way veterinarians already manage patients.
The veterinarian remains the veterinarian. The cardiologist remains the cardiologist. Advanced diagnostics still have an essential role. Sonus simply connects those pieces across a much longer period of the patient's life.
There’s a Practice Opportunity Here, Too
There is also a business side to this that makes sense for veterinary practices. Veterinarians already recommend monitoring all the time, but historically, much of that monitoring has not been structured as an actual clinical service. Practices tell clients to watch their pets, return in several months, or call if something changes. Then everyone waits.
Sonus gives practices the ability to turn that recommendation into an ongoing cardiac care plan. The clinic determines the monitoring schedule, the owner performs the scans at home, and the veterinary team continues following the patient between physical visits. Rather than a single transaction during an annual examination, the practice can build a continuing relationship around cardiac monitoring.
That creates a new opportunity for recurring revenue, but importantly, the revenue is connected to real patient care. The practice isn't simply adding another product to the invoice. It is providing ongoing medical oversight, following trends and helping determine when a patient needs additional attention. For practices already thinking about senior wellness programs, chronic-care plans and more continuous models of veterinary medicine, cardiac monitoring could fit naturally into that approach.
This Isn’t About Replacing the Veterinarian
Whenever artificial intelligence enters veterinary medicine, the conversation tends to jump immediately to what it might replace. In this case, that misses the more interesting story. Sonus isn't trying to eliminate the physical examination, the veterinarian's stethoscope, the cardiologist or advanced cardiac diagnostics. It is trying to connect them.
The owner collects information at home. Technology helps make sense of the recording. The primary veterinarian follows the patient over time. When additional expertise is needed, a board-certified veterinary cardiologist can review the recording and provide written clinical context and recommendations. If the patient ultimately needs an echocardiogram or referral, that still happens.
What changes is what the veterinary team knows during all those weeks and months in between.
Maybe the Annual Exam Shouldn’t Be the Whole Story
For most of veterinary medicine's history, patient care has been episodic. An animal comes into the hospital, the veterinary team collects information, makes decisions, provides treatment and sends the patient home. Months may pass before anyone in the practice has meaningful clinical information about that animal again.
Technology is beginning to make a different model possible. Wearables, home diagnostics, remote monitoring and smartphone-based tools are extending pieces of veterinary care beyond the hospital. Cardiology may be particularly well suited to that shift because progression matters, and a heart does not wait until the next scheduled appointment to change.
That is ultimately what makes Sonus interesting. The patient still needs a veterinarian, and some patients will still need advanced diagnostics or an in-person cardiology consultation. But the dog with the soft murmur does not necessarily have to disappear for six months with nothing more than instructions to “watch him.”
