Purina Launches New Two-Step FortiFlora Kit for Dogs and Cats With Diarrhea
The new nonprescription FortiFlora Diarrhea Response Kit pairs kaolin and pectin for short-term stool support with Purina's probiotic to support digestive health.
Diarrhea is one of those clinical signs veterinary teams deal with constantly, and now Purina is giving pet owners a new option for managing occasional episodes at home.
Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Supplements has introduced the FortiFlora Diarrhea Response Kit, a two-step system for dogs and cats that combines its FortiFlora Response stick packs with its familiar FortiFlora probiotic sachets. The new kits are available without a prescription and are designed to provide an easy-to-follow approach to occasional diarrhea while supporting longer-term digestive health.
The concept is relatively simple: address the loose stool first, then support the gut.
A Two-Step Approach to Diarrhea
The first part of the kit is FortiFlora Response, which contains kaolin and pectin. These ingredients are intended to help firm loose stools and soothe the gastrointestinal tract, providing short-term support while a pet is experiencing diarrhea.
The second component is FortiFlora sachets, which contain Enterococcus lactis SF68, the probiotic strain used in Purina's FortiFlora products. The probiotic is intended to help support healthy digestive and immune systems.
Together, the products give owners a defined two-step process rather than leaving them to decide which gastrointestinal supplement to reach for and when to use it.
“No one wants their pet to be uncomfortable, and diarrhea can be stressful for pets and owners,” said Martha Cline, DVM, DACVIM, a veterinary nutritionist at Purina. “The FortiFlora Diarrhea Response Kit gives pet owners a clear, two-step plan, rooted in the same probiotic veterinarians have trusted for 20 years.”
Why the OTC Availability Matters
For veterinary teams, the fact that the kit is available without a prescription could make it a convenient option to discuss with clients whose pets experience occasional diarrhea.
It may also give practices an opportunity to provide clearer guidance about when home management is reasonable—and when diarrhea deserves a veterinary examination.
Not every case of diarrhea is simply an upset stomach. Persistent or severe diarrhea, blood in the stool, repeated vomiting, lethargy, abdominal discomfort, loss of appetite, dehydration, or diarrhea involving very young, elderly, or medically compromised animals can warrant veterinary evaluation. A supplement designed for occasional diarrhea shouldn't delay diagnosis when an underlying disease may be responsible.
That distinction is especially important as more veterinary products become readily available to consumers online. Giving owners a tool for mild, occasional gastrointestinal upset can be useful, but giving them clear parameters for when to call the veterinary team remains just as important.
Gut Health Continues to Move Into the Spotlight
The launch also reflects the growing attention being paid to the gastrointestinal microbiome in companion animal health. Probiotics and other digestive supplements have become increasingly familiar to pet owners, while veterinarians continue to field questions about which products to use, when to use them, and what they can realistically be expected to accomplish.
Purina's approach with the new kit packages two different goals into one system: short-term support for loose stool followed by probiotic support for digestive health.
For pet owners, that may make dealing with an unpleasant problem a little less confusing. For veterinary teams, it offers another potential tool for conversations about occasional diarrhea, gastrointestinal health, and perhaps most importantly, knowing when a pet needs more than something from the supplement cabinet.
