Anthrax Confirmed in Texas Goat as Officials Warn Ranchers to Watch Livestock Closely

The case is the second confirmed animal anthrax infection in Texas this year and the third reported in the United States, highlighting the unusual ability of a deadly bacterium to survive underground for decades and reappear when environmental conditions are right.

A goat in Southwest Texas has tested positive for anthrax, putting livestock owners and veterinarians in a region already familiar with the disease back on alert.

The case was confirmed in Edwards County, an area located within a part of Southwest Texas commonly known as the “Anthrax Triangle.” According to reporting by Newsweek, the goat is the second confirmed animal anthrax case in Texas this year and the third reported in the United States in 2026. The affected property has been quarantined, and Texas animal health officials say only one domestic animal is currently known to have been affected.

Texas reported its first case of the year in January, when anthrax was confirmed in a steer in Briscoe County in the Texas Panhandle. An additional case was reported in a beef herd in Cassia County, Idaho, in February.

For most Americans, anthrax is a disease associated with bioterrorism and the attacks of 2001. For ranchers and veterinarians in parts of Texas, however, anthrax is something very different. It is a naturally occurring livestock and wildlife disease that can seemingly disappear for years before environmental conditions bring it back to the surface.

A Disease That Can Wait Underground for Decades

Anthrax is caused by Bacillus anthracis, a bacterium capable of forming extraordinarily resilient spores. Those spores can persist in soil for years or even decades, creating areas where the disease can repeatedly emerge in grazing animals.

Cattle, sheep, goats, deer and other herbivores are particularly susceptible because they can encounter spores while grazing or drinking from contaminated environments. Once the bacteria enter a susceptible animal, the progression can be frighteningly fast.

According to information provided to Newsweek, exposed animals generally develop signs within three to seven days, and death can occur within 48 hours once clinical illness appears. Acute fever, sudden death and bloody discharge from body openings are among the signs that may raise suspicion.

In some cases, sudden death may be the first thing a livestock owner notices.

That rapid progression is one reason prevention is so important in areas where anthrax is known to occur. Waiting for animals to become visibly ill can leave veterinarians and producers with very little time to respond.

Texas Has an Anthrax Triangle

The Edwards County case didn't appear in a completely unexpected location.

Anthrax is historically associated with a region of Southwest Texas roughly bounded by Uvalde, Ozona and Eagle Pass. Known as the Anthrax Triangle, the region includes all or portions of Edwards, Val Verde, Sutton, Kinney, Crockett, Maverick and Uvalde counties.

The organism's presence in the soil means that eliminating anthrax from the environment isn't a realistic strategy. Instead, veterinarians and livestock owners have to anticipate when conditions may increase the likelihood that dormant spores will become accessible to animals.

Weather can play a surprisingly important role.

Texas animal health officials say anthrax activity can increase following periods of wet, cool weather that are followed by prolonged heat and dry conditions. Those changes can bring spores into contact with surface soil and vegetation where grazing animals may encounter them.

Parts of Texas experienced substantial rainfall and flooding earlier this summer before returning to hot, dry weather, creating the kind of environmental pattern historically associated with anthrax outbreaks.

“With the weather we’ve experienced in Texas this year, in areas where anthrax has historically been found, we encourage monitoring and vaccinating susceptible animals,” Texas State Veterinarian and Texas Animal Health Commission Executive Director Dr. Bud Dinges said in a statement cited by Newsweek.

For ranchers in endemic areas, that makes the weather forecast more than a conversation about pasture conditions. It can also become part of infectious disease prevention.

Vaccination Before Exposure Matters

Unlike many emerging livestock threats, anthrax isn't a disease veterinarians are powerless to prevent.

Vaccination is available for susceptible livestock, and Texas officials are encouraging producers in areas with a history of anthrax to work with their veterinarians on preventive strategies before animals are exposed.

That “before” matters.

Once animals are dying, the situation becomes more complicated for the entire herd. A veterinarian-client-patient relationship gives producers an opportunity to discuss vaccination timing, herd risk, environmental conditions and what to do if sudden deaths occur.

It also gives veterinarians an opportunity to remind owners that an animal suspected of dying from anthrax shouldn't be treated like an ordinary livestock mortality.

Opening or disturbing a carcass can expose more of the environment to bacteria and potentially create additional risk for people and animals. When anthrax is suspected, animal health authorities and a veterinarian should be contacted so the situation can be handled appropriately.

In a region where spores can remain viable for decades, preventing additional environmental contamination has implications extending far beyond a single outbreak.

The Human Health Risk Is Low, But It Isn't Zero

Anthrax is also a zoonotic disease, which means a livestock diagnosis immediately becomes a human health consideration.

People can become infected when spores enter through breaks in the skin, are inhaled, or are consumed in contaminated food or water. Human anthrax remains rare in the United States, and the disease generally doesn't spread from one person to another.

In this case, Texas health officials told Newsweek that there have been no reported human anthrax cases in Texas in 2026. Contact with the infected goat was reportedly limited to the owner and a veterinarian, both of whom used personal protective equipment while handling livestock.

Officials determined there were no human exposures requiring post-exposure prophylaxis. The remaining animals on the affected property are under quarantine, and the Texas Department of State Health Services considers the risk to the general public low.

State officials also emphasized an important point that can easily get lost when the word anthrax appears in a headline: this is naturally occurring disease.

“This is not the same as ‘bioterrorism’ anthrax,” a Texas Department of State Health Services spokesperson told Newsweek, noting that the region is endemic for anthrax in the soil and sporadic animal cases occur there.

Texas Ranchers Are Watching More Than One Threat

The anthrax case arrives during an already complicated year for livestock health in Texas.

Ranchers and animal health officials have also been closely monitoring the northward movement of New World screwworm through Mexico. The flesh-eating parasite has prompted increased surveillance and biosecurity efforts aimed at preventing its reestablishment in U.S. livestock.

Anthrax and screwworm are very different threats, but their simultaneous presence in the livestock conversation demonstrates how quickly veterinarians can find themselves managing diseases influenced by wildlife, insects, weather, animal movement and environmental conditions.

For producers, it also means biosecurity can't focus on a single disease. Monitoring animals closely, maintaining a relationship with a veterinarian, investigating unexplained deaths and recognizing changes in local disease activity are increasingly important parts of herd management.

Sometimes the Threat Was Already There

There is something particularly unsettling about anthrax because a new outbreak doesn't necessarily mean a new pathogen has arrived.

The bacteria responsible for the next case may have been sitting quietly beneath a pasture for years.

Rain comes. Conditions change. The ground dries. Animals graze. And a pathogen that appeared to have disappeared suddenly has another opportunity to infect a host.

That is what makes the Edwards County case worth watching even though only one domestic animal is currently known to have been affected. It is a signal to veterinarians and livestock owners in historically affected areas that environmental conditions may once again favor exposure.

For most of the country, anthrax remains an uncommon veterinary diagnosis. In Southwest Texas, history is literally in the soil.

And when the weather creates the right conditions, that history can come back to life.
