A Nebraska Lab May Have Found the H5N1 Vaccine Cattle Have Been Waiting For

There's still no licensed bird flu vaccine for dairy cattle. A team at the University of Nebraska just published results that could change that, and the same platform might work in people too.

Bird flu was supposed to be a poultry problem. Then in 2024 it jumped into dairy cattle, something influenza A had never managed to do before, and about 70 farm workers ended up sick after close contact with infected animals. Nearly 166 million commercial birds have been culled in the U.S. since 2022, and the virus has shown zero interest in going away quietly.

Now a team at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, led by virologist Eric Weaver, thinks they may have a real answer. Their vaccine candidate, developed with postdoctoral researchers Joshua Wiggins and Adthakorn Madapong, produced strong immune responses and full protection against severe disease in both mice and dairy calves. The findings are headed for publication in NPJ Vaccines.

There are currently no licensed H5N1 vaccines for cattle. This is the closest the field has come.

Why This One's Different

Most flu vaccines only cover you in one place. This one is built to cover two. The team gave calves an intramuscular dose at one week old, followed by an intranasal booster four weeks later, essentially building immunity in the bloodstream and the respiratory tract at the same time.

Weaver explained the logic behind that combination plainly. The intramuscular component is meant to stop the virus from spreading through the body once an animal is exposed. The intranasal piece targets mucosal immunity, the kind that could actually stop transmission from one animal to the next, which is the piece that matters most on a working dairy.

The vaccine also isn't chasing a single strain. It's designed to protect against multiple H5N1 variants, which matters a lot given how quickly this virus has been mutating and jumping hosts since it showed up in cattle.

This Isn't a New Idea, Just a Delayed One

Weaver's involvement with this research goes back two decades. He started working on an H5N1 platform back in 2005, well before anyone was worried about it showing up in a milking parlor. The project went quiet for about ten years until the 2024 outbreak brought it roaring back.

He didn't expect it to get this far. His hope, in his own words, was that the virus would cycle through dairy cattle and disappear on its own. Instead it got progressively worse, which pushed the lab to pick the work back up and get calves into testing by early 2025 with help from Nebraska's Animal Care Team.

What Comes Next

Preclinical success is not the same thing as a product on the shelf. Weaver is now looking for funding and partners to move the platform forward, including exploring a multispecies version that could eventually protect more than just cattle. That's not a small detail either. Weaver has said the same platform shows promise as a human vaccine candidate, which would put livestock protection and public health on the same track instead of two separate ones.

Why This Matters at the Practice and Farm Level

For food animal vets and the operations they serve, a licensed H5N1 vaccine would close a real gap. Right now there's nothing approved to protect a dairy herd from this virus, which means outbreaks get managed reactively instead of prevented. A vaccine that limits spread within a herd also limits the number of chances the virus gets to mutate its way toward easier transmission between species, including into people.

Weaver put the bigger picture simply. Influenza A has never been a cattle problem before. Now it is, and the pattern with viruses that make that kind of jump is that extended contact eventually gives them the opportunity to adapt further. Getting ahead of that with a working vaccine isn't just about protecting margins on a dairy operation. It's about keeping the door closed before the virus finds another one to walk through.
