New Fund Aims to Help Veterinarians Say "Yes" to More Pets in Need
Lakefield Veterinary Group launches the Care Beyond Limits Fund to help families overcome financial barriers to life-saving veterinary care.
For many veterinary professionals, one of the hardest parts of the job isn't making a diagnosis or performing a complicated surgery—it's having to tell a pet owner that treatment may not be possible because of cost.
Financial limitations remain one of the most challenging realities in companion animal practice. Every day, veterinarians are faced with emotionally difficult conversations when clients simply cannot afford the care their pets need. While payment plans, charitable organizations, and nonprofit assistance programs have helped bridge some of the gap, many practices continue searching for ways to keep lifesaving treatment within reach.
Now, Lakefield Veterinary Group is introducing a new initiative designed to give veterinary teams another option.
The company recently announced the launch of the Care Beyond Limits Fund, a charitable program that provides financial assistance for qualifying medical cases at Lakefield's network of more than 80 veterinary hospitals across the United States.
The goal is simple: ensure that treatment decisions are guided by what is medically best for the patient—not solely by a family's financial circumstances.
Helping Pets When Families Need It Most
The Care Beyond Limits Fund was created to support pets diagnosed with treatable conditions whose owners are experiencing financial hardship. Rather than requiring clients to search for outside funding on their own, Lakefield hospitals can submit eligible cases for review through an internal committee of licensed veterinarians.
Funding is prioritized for patients with a favorable prognosis and a strong likelihood of returning to a good quality of life following treatment.
According to Lakefield Veterinary Group CEO Mollie Hoff, the program addresses a challenge veterinary professionals know all too well.
"Veterinary teams are regularly presented with pets in need of life-saving treatment, but their families are not able to afford the care," Hoff said in announcing the program. "The Care Beyond Limits Fund allows our hospitals to step in during those very difficult times and provide financial assistance that can truly change the outcome for a pet and their family."
Scrap's Story
One of the fund's first recipients was a cat named Scrap, who arrived at Companions Animal Hospital after surviving a coyote attack.
Scrap suffered a devastating leg injury that became severely infected and required emergency amputation. Although the prognosis following surgery was excellent, the procedure presented a significant financial challenge for the family.
Through the Care Beyond Limits Fund, the hospital was able to move forward with treatment.
"When we called the owner to let her know the funding had been approved, she was so appreciative of all the efforts to help," said Sherry Thien, hospital administrator at Companions Animal Hospital. "She had been facing an impossible decision and desperately wanted to help her cat. Knowing we could move forward with treatment through the fund was an incredible relief for everyone involved."
Following surgery, Scrap was expected to recover well and return to a comfortable, pain-free life.
A Growing Need Across Veterinary Medicine
Financial conversations have become an increasingly common part of veterinary practice.
As the cost of advanced diagnostics, specialty care, and surgical procedures continues to rise, veterinarians are balancing a difficult reality: providing the highest standard of medicine while recognizing that many families face financial constraints.
These situations can also contribute to compassion fatigue and moral stress among veterinary professionals. Knowing a pet has an excellent chance of recovery—but watching treatment become inaccessible because of finances—is an experience many veterinarians know all too well.
Programs like the Care Beyond Limits Fund aim to ease that burden by giving hospital teams another avenue to advocate for their patients.
Supporting Veterinary Teams, Too
Beyond helping pets, Lakefield says the program is intended to support the doctors, technicians, and support staff who work closely with families during some of their most difficult moments.
"Our hospitals are deeply connected to the communities they serve," Hoff said. "Care Beyond Limits gives our teams another way to support families during challenging times while preserving the human-animal bond that means so much to all of us."
By placing funding decisions in the hands of an internal committee of licensed veterinarians, the program focuses resources on cases where treatment is medically appropriate and expected to provide a meaningful outcome.
Part of a Broader Commitment
The Care Beyond Limits Fund is the newest addition to Lakefield Veterinary Group's philanthropic efforts.
The organization has long supported veterinary outreach initiatives, including partnerships with World Vets, support for a free veterinary hospital in the Galápagos Islands, and international volunteer opportunities for veterinary team members.
Together, these programs reflect a growing emphasis on expanding access to veterinary care while strengthening the bond between pets and the families who love them.
As veterinary medicine continues to evolve, initiatives like the Care Beyond Limits Fund highlight an important truth: sometimes the most powerful treatment isn't a new drug or surgical technique—it's giving a family the chance to say "yes" to the care their pet desperately needs.
Lakefield Veterinary Group is a family-owned veterinary hospital organization with more than 80 hospitals across 12 states and over 2,000 employees. The company partners with locally led veterinary hospitals while preserving their independence and community-focused approach to care.
