LSU Vet Med Just Handed Out $346,178 to Its Students. Here's Why That Number Matters.
Every year, the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine publishes its scholarship and award recipients, and every year it is worth pausing on the scale of what that list represents.
In 2026, LSU Vet Med distributed approximately $346,178 in scholarships and awards to first, second, and third year veterinary students. That number does not include the awards given to the graduating Class of 2026, which are announced separately at commencement. Since 2016, the school has distributed more than $2.79 million in total, funded entirely by private citizens, foundations, organizations, and corporations who decided that investing in the next generation of veterinary professionals was worth their money.
That is not a small thing. Veterinary school is expensive, the debt load carried by new graduates is one of the most pressing structural problems in the profession, and every dollar directed toward a student in their first, second, or third year is a dollar that does not have to be borrowed. Scholarships change what careers are possible. They change where new graduates can afford to work, what risks they can take, and how quickly they can begin building the kind of financial stability that makes long-term practice sustainable.
The recipients this year came from across the country and Puerto Rico, representing a wide range of backgrounds, home states, and career trajectories. Named awards honored donors, mentors, and colleagues who left their mark on the profession and chose to extend that mark forward through student support. There are equine scholarships and companion animal scholarships, leadership awards and memorial funds, nutrition scholarships and ophthalmology awards. Taken together, they reflect a community that takes its responsibility to the next generation seriously.
To every student on this list: your profession noticed you. Keep going.
