Westminster Kennel Club Opens Nominations for 2026 Veterinarian of the Year Award on World Veterinary Day

The Westminster Kennel Club has officially announced the opening of nominations for its 2026 Veterinarian of the Year Award, presented by Purina Pro Plan Veterinary, marking the initiative’s fifth anniversary. The program celebrates the vital role veterinarians play in animal health and welfare while also highlighting the growing challenges faced within the profession.

Nominations open April 25, 2026—coinciding with World Veterinary Day—and will remain available through May 21 at westminsterkennelclub.org.

Celebrating veterinary excellence

Now in its fifth year, the Veterinarian of the Year (VOTY) Award recognizes outstanding veterinarians across the United States who demonstrate exceptional dedication, compassion, and advocacy for animal care. The award is part of the Westminster Kennel Club’s broader Westminster Cares initiative, which supports canine health, breed education, rescue efforts, and responsible dog ownership.

Dr. Donald Sturz, President of the Westminster Kennel Club, emphasized the importance of honoring veterinary professionals:

“For over 150 years, The Westminster Kennel Club has centered itself around a tradition of caring in order to create a better world for dogs, and we simply cannot do that without the dedication and support of the veterinary community.”

New this year: fan voting

For the first time in the program’s history, the 2026 award will incorporate fan voting. After the nomination period closes, an expert committee made up of Westminster representatives and past VOTY winners will select four regional finalists from public submissions.

Those finalists will then advance to a fan voting round scheduled for June 7–10, 2026, with the public helping to determine the final winner.

The 2026 Westminster Veterinarian of the Year will receive a $10,000 donation made in their name to a Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Support Mission partner, along with year-round recognition.

Building on a growing legacy

The 2025 VOTY cycle saw more than 300 nominations nationwide, ultimately honoring Dr. Sara K. Lyle of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, for her leadership in veterinary medicine and animal advocacy.

The award continues to grow as a platform for elevating veterinary voices and strengthening public appreciation for the profession.
