Pain evaluation post hemilaminectomy
Researchers evaluated mechanical sensory thresholds (MSTs) in dogs after hemilaminectomy over a 1-year period. Thirty-two healthy dogs and 40 dogs with spinal cord injury were examined. The dogs were divided into three groups, group 1 were healthy Dachshunds, group 2 were healthy dogs of various breeds, and group 3 were dogs with spinal cord injury.

The results of the study showed that the mechanical sensory threshold of spinal cord injury dogs was significantly lower than healthy dogs for 42 days. Approximately 15% of dogs with injury had control site MST below the reference range 1 year after surgery.
The study suggests that mechanical sensory thresholds normalize by 6 months post surgery. Approximately 15% of spinal cord injury dogs may develop chronic neuropathic pain.
