Evaluation of antibody response to feline herpesvirus-1
A study evaluated the antibody level of one hundred and ten cats. The cats had not received a vaccination within 12 months. The cats were given a feline herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1) and then evaluated for antibody levels on day O (before vaccination), on day 7, and on day 28 through a serum neutralization test.
Pre-vaccination neutralizing antibody titers (⩾10) were present in 40.9% of cats and were generally low (range 10-640). Antibody response to vaccination, which is defined as being greater than a four-fold titer increase, was observed in 8.3%. Cats ⩾2 years of age were more likely to have pre-vaccination neutralizing antibodies than cats aged between 1 and 2 years. Cats from breeders were more likely to have pre-vaccination neutralizing antibodies than privately owned cats. Domestic shorthair cats were more likely to have an at least four-fold titer increase vs purebred cats.
