Vet Candy founder, Dr. Jill López, nominated for Women of Inspiration™ awards

It’s common to hear about the powerful ripple effect of women when they venture into business. And that’s why supporting women entrepreneurs is more about changing the mindset of girls and women all around the world.

For many women in the veterinary industry, it is a common belief that you have to sacrifice your personal life if you want to climb up the ladder.  This is not always the case and it shouldn’t be the case at all. The alternative solution is to surround yourself with strong female leaders and mentors that can help guide you to break the proverbial glass ceiling.

Dr. Jill Lopez is a phenomenon in the animal health industry, and her career is full of great successes.  In her stint in the pharmaceutical arena (over the last 15 years), she has authored dozens of scientific papers, helped detect and monitor infectious diseases, and launched multi-million dollar veterinary products. For aspiring female veterinarians, she is a true embodiment of what they can become.

In 2017, for the first time in history, women finally became the majority in the veterinary field. Today, the AVMA says that 2/3 of all veterinarians are exclusively small animal practioners; of these, 63% are female. Women also makeup 85% of all veterinary students, while veterinary technicians are about 90% female.

With the majority of professionals in the veterinary world being women, the leadership is still mostly male, gender balance is a major issue in the profession.

That’s why Dr. Lopez created Vet Candy. Vet Candy seeks to accelerate a culture shift within the profession that supports inclusion, diversity, and gender balance. That commitment can be seen on every Vet Candy creation, from Vet Candy TV, Vet Candy Continuing Education, to Vet Candy Podcasts, monthly magazine, and books.

Through Vet Candy, Dr. Lopez wants to make this a thing of the past by serving the veterinary community with a resource that helps with expert lifestyle advice mixed with educational resources that make learning fun and less time consuming. . Real change will come when female leaders are less of an exception and more the norm across the industry and academia.

It is no wonder that Dr. Lopez was nominated for Women of Inspiration, an award program that is part of the Universal Womens Network™

On September 26, 2015, the inaugural Woman of Inspiration™ Awards recognized one woman who inspired our founder to create an award to honour the everyday hero.
