Performance of lymph node cytopathology in diagnosis and characterization of lymphoma in dogs

Researchers evaluated the the diagnostic performance of cytopathology in diagnosing lymphoma in one-hundred and sixty-one lymph node samples from 139 dogs with enlarged peripheral lymph nodes.

The results indicated that cytopathology was accurate for lymphoma was greater than 80%, however, it accuracy decreased when further characterization was needed and accuracy was greater than 60% for low grade T-cell lymphomas, greater than 30% for high grade B-cell lymphomas, greater than 20% for high grade T-cell lymphomas, and Less than 40% for low grade B-cell lymphomas.

This study suggests that while cytopathology is helpful in identifying lymphomas, additional diagnostics should be considered to confirm the grade and phenotype.
