Tips for dealing with workplace homophobia

Not everyone is open to the LGBT community. For what ever reason, these people either outright dislike the LGBT community, or have adopted offensive terminology without even realizing it. (“That's so gay!”) These same people also need to have a job, and sometimes that job is going to put them in striking distance of an LGBT member.

Dealing with homophobia at work can be stressful and embarrassing. You don't always know what to say or do when someone is bullying you, making you feel like you're in highschool all over again, simply because of your sexual orientation.

If you're struggling with workplace homophobia, here's what you can do.

Know the Law

As of 2019, only 28 states have laws protecting LGBT members from discrimination in the workplace, but everyone has protection against harassment and a hostile work environment. Check the laws in your state to see what you are protected against, and alert HR to any harassment that follows you.

Communicate

Your boss can't help you if he or she doesn't know the problem, so if you're suffering from constant insults from homophobic coworkers, alert the people who have the authority to change it. If your boss is the problem, talking to their boss or even a lawyer may be the steps you need to take in order to end the problem.

You may need to document the issue, so that the people who have the power to stop the problem can clearly see what is going on.

Get community support

Times are changing, and more people than ever support the LGBT community. If you're struggling with a homophobic workplace, turning to community members may be what you need to do.

You're not alone. There are people all over the world who want to help and support you, and you have a right to that support. If you're dealing with homophobia in the workplace, use these steps to help you create an improved working environment today.
