Grinding it out at the gym isn't for everyone. If the idea of hitting the dreadmill makes you feel sick, and you want to try something a little bit more exciting, Capoeira may be the right choice for you.

Capoeira is a cross between martial arts and dance. Spins, kicks and cartwheels come together into a beautifully coreographed dance that looks like a battle. It was invented by Brazilians and is still in practice today as a form of exercise.

One look at a dazzling display by advanced Capoeira practicioners might be enough to scare off the beginner, but of course just like you don't start off lifting 300 pounds, you also don't start off with wild and crazy moves.

It can take a year or more to “belt up” and be ready for the more advanced moves, but it shouldn't stop you from trying it out. You'll enjoy toned muscles, improved coordination and flexibility, and improved heart health. It's also a great way to burn calories. One hour of Capoeira can burn as many as 500 calories. That's quite a bit, even compared to a treadmill.

Best of all, starting equipment is simply loose and comfortable clothing, and there's a surprising number of studios available. If you look, there is likely to be one near you.

Capoeira isn't for everyone. Due to the intensity of the workout there is a risk of injury, and even though there is no physical contact involved, it is very demanding on the body. It also has a reputation for being somewhat elitest, as people who enjoy the sport become consumed by its culture and unique art form.

Capoeira is a beautiful sport, and if you don't mind embracing the culture and working hard, it could be a fun way to stay fit and burn calories all at the same time.
