AKC Humane Fund Expands Mission to Support Pet Owners with Critical Veterinary Care

The AKC Humane Fund is expanding its mission and this time, it’s targeting one of the biggest pain points in veterinary medicine: access to critical care.

The New York–based nonprofit announced it is broadening its focus to provide direct support for low-income pet owners facing life-threatening veterinary emergencies. As part of the initiative, the organization is distributing its first round of funding — a total of $25,000 — to three major veterinary charitable partners:

  • Banfield Foundation

  • BluePearl Cares

  • VCA Charities

The goal? Help income-qualified families access emergency and specialty care when the alternative might be euthanasia due to cost.

“Access to critical veterinary care can be the difference between a family keeping their beloved pet or facing an impossible decision,” said Brandi Hunter Munden, President and CEO of the AKC Humane Fund. “We are responding to a real and growing need.”

Veterinary professionals know this reality all too well. Rising costs, advanced medical capabilities, and economic strain have widened the gap between what is medically possible and what clients can afford — especially in emergency settings.

By partnering with established veterinary charities embedded within clinical networks, the AKC Humane Fund is directing resources where they can make immediate impact for pets in crisis.

Kim Van Syoc, Executive Director of the recipient charities, emphasized that increasing access to veterinary care is central to their mission and noted that partnerships like this allow them to support more families during life-threatening emergencies.

Why This Matters to Veterinary Teams

For clinicians, this move signals something important:

  • National organizations are recognizing the access-to-care crisis.

  • Collaborative funding models are gaining traction.

  • Financial assistance is becoming a larger part of the care ecosystem.

The AKC Humane Fund has historically supported domestic violence shelters, breed rescue, and veterinary scholarships. This expansion builds on that legacy — but shifts attention directly to the affordability crisis many veterinary teams navigate daily.

Additional partnerships and funding announcements are expected as the program grows.
