Why People Choose Flat-Faced Dogs—and How Awareness Can Protect Their Health
Flat-faced, or brachycephalic, dog breeds like French Bulldogs, Pugs, Bulldogs, and Boston Terriers have surged in popularity in recent years. Their adorable looks make them appealing, but these breeds are prone to serious health issues, including breathing problems, overheating, and eye injuries. A recent study from an Italian veterinary teaching hospital explored why owners choose these dogs and how aware they are of potential welfare concerns.
The study reviewed 497 brachycephalic dog owners seen at the university clinic over six years, with a subset of 75 completing a detailed questionnaire. Owners’ motivations fell into three categories. Some were trend-driven, influenced by aesthetics, fashion, or celebrity endorsements. Others were value-oriented, choosing dogs for intelligence, behavior, and companionship. A smaller group had less-defined reasons for their choice.
Researchers found that brachycephalic dog owners were generally younger than the average dog owner. Value-oriented owners were more likely to consult a veterinarian before getting their dog and were more aware of typical respiratory issues—but this knowledge didn’t always affect their decision to buy the breed. Trend-driven owners were less engaged with preventive care and more influenced by public figures, highlighting gaps in awareness.
The study emphasizes the importance of pre-acquisition veterinary counseling. By educating potential owners about breed-specific health risks and encouraging ethical breeding practices, veterinarians can help families make informed decisions that protect both the dog’s welfare and long-term quality of life. Choosing a dog should go beyond looks; understanding a breed’s health needs ensures a happy, healthy companion for years to come.
