Olive leaf extract, a key to better health

Almost everyone has enjoyed an olive or two, and even if you can't stand them, you probably know about the health benefits of olive oil and other products from the olive tree. Yet as wonderful as olives are, the leaves of the olive tree might actually be even better for your health.

With so many supplements out there, and many of them not as good for our health as we thought, it's tempting to turn a skeptical eye on a buzzy new supplement like olive leaf extract, but olive leaves have actually been used for thousands of years as a medicine. Only recently has science started taking a hard look at it, and finding out just how good this supplement may be for human health.

The benefits according to science

Oleuropein, the active component of olive leaves, is a powerful anti-inflammatory, and also has anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral effects. It has also been proven effective in animal studies to be a healthy way to control high blood pressure. A 2014 study conducted published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences took a detailed look at olive leaf extract, and found that it could help people in a number of ways ranging from easing joint pain to improving heart health.

Oleuropein is also found an olive oil, but in lesser amounts. It is one of the reasons why olive oil is thought to be so healthy, as well as being a source of important fatty acids. If you're on a diet however, you may not be wild about the calories that come along with olive oil. You can change it up and still get the health benefits by taking olive leaf extract instead.

Olive leaf extract has had many studies done on it, and its possible benefits in treating a range of diseases, from herpes and HIV to influenza. These trials have not reached human phase yet, but have shown promise at killing virus and bacteria caused diseases in culture tests. This means that olive leaf extract does have anti-bacterial, viral, and fungal effects, but may not work the same way outside of a test tube. More research is needed.

This extract may also help prevent cognitive decline and reduce the risk of getting diabetes, making it a wonderful all around supplement to take. According to a separate 2014 study, olive leaf extract may help with weight loss in addition to its many other benefits, making it a truly wonderful supplement all in all.

As always, see a doctor first

Although it can be very helpful in treating hypertension and other blood pressure related problems, you should ask a doctor before taking this supplement. Olive leaf extract can interact with medications, and it is best to have expert guidance before choosing to change up your health routine.

Olive leaf extract has a lot of potential, but it is still being studied by scientists. Until we know everything we can about this supplement, it's best to tailor your healthcare routine with the help of someone who knows you best---your family doctor.
