"The Real Reason for Pets," Celebrates the Joys of Pet Ownership

The Human Animal Bond Research Institute has launched a new national campaign designed to celebrate the emotional and scientific value of pets in everyday life while encouraging responsible pet ownership.

The campaign, “The Real Reason for Pets,” is built around decades of research on the human-animal bond and focuses on sharing real-life stories that demonstrate how pets contribute to physical, emotional, and social wellbeing. The initiative arrives amid growing national conversations about stress, loneliness, and mental health, with organizers saying pets continue to play an important role in helping people feel more connected.

Campaign leaders say the goal is to combine scientific evidence with personal experiences to highlight the many reasons people choose to bring pets into their homes. The campaign emphasizes both measurable health outcomes and the smaller, meaningful moments of daily life with companion animals.

Research supported by HABRI shows pets can help improve mental health, reduce stress, and support cardiovascular health. Data from the organization indicates that 87% of pet owners report mental health benefits from pet ownership, 80% say their pets help reduce loneliness, and more than 20% report that healthcare professionals have recommended pet companionship as part of their wellness strategies.

HABRI President Steven Feldman said the campaign aims to bring scientific research and emotional connection together to support both current and prospective pet owners. He noted that while data helps demonstrate health benefits, personal experiences often explain why people develop strong bonds with animals.

The campaign is supported through donations from industry partners including the World Pet Association and the American Pet Products Association. Supporters say the initiative helps promote informed and responsible pet ownership while highlighting the positive impact pets have on society.

Campaign materials will be distributed through digital media and social platforms nationwide, encouraging pet owners to share their own stories using the hashtag #RealReasonForPets. Organizers also launched a campaign website providing educational resources, research summaries, and pet care information to support new and prospective pet owners.

HABRI is a nonprofit organization focused on funding scientific research on the benefits of companion animals, educating the public about human-animal bond science, and promoting the role of pets in improving quality of life.

The campaign reflects broader efforts to connect scientific research with public awareness initiatives that support both animal welfare and human health outcomes.
