Royal Canin Busts Common Myths on National Take Your Cat to the Vet Day

In honor of National Take Your Cat to the Vet Day, Royal Canin is urging cat owners to schedule their pets’ annual wellness exams and debunking persistent myths that prevent cats from receiving essential veterinary care.

A recent survey of 380 U.S. cat owners, conducted by ROYAL CANIN® U.S., reveals that while annual checkups are becoming more common, misconceptions still influence pet care decisions:

  • 51% of owners believe cats are self-sufficient and need little medical care.

  • Fewer than half strongly agree they understand the health risks of skipping regular vet visits.

  • 41% of owners think veterinary care is only necessary during kittenhood, and 1 in 5 only visit the vet when their cat shows signs of illness.

“While cats are important parts of owners’ lives and families, misconceptions about the level of care needed impacts our conversations around feline health and the priority of routine veterinary appointments,” said Racquel White, Vice President of Corporate Affairs at Royal Canin North America. “Let National Take Your Cat to the Vet Day be your reminder to schedule a wellness checkup and to advocate for your pet's health.”

Cats often hide pain or illness, making preventive care critical at all life stages—not just during kittenhood. Nearly all respondents (94%) agreed that early veterinary care is important, but regular checkups throughout a cat’s life are essential to detect issues before they become serious.
