UC Davis Welcomes 57 New House Officers
The UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM) has welcomed 57 new house officers to its advanced clinical training programs this year, including 41 residents, 8 fellows, and 8 interns. With 144 total house officers currently in training, the UC Davis House Officer Program remains the largest of its kind in the United States. The program spans approximately 40 specialties, offering one- to four-year opportunities in areas such as oncology, equine surgery, internal medicine, and anesthesiology.
“I’m excited to be back at UC Davis for my residency,” said Dr. Bryce Westbrook, a member of the UC Davis SVM class of 2024 who is beginning a three-year residency in medical oncology. “The breadth of cases at UC Davis was one of the driving factors in my decision to return. Not only am I excited about learning more about treating cancer, but I’m excited to work with the students, which I enjoyed last year during my internship.”
Most residency programs at UC Davis meet the training requirements for veterinary specialty board certification. After completing clinical training, passing board exams, and meeting credentialing standards, these veterinarians become board-certified specialists in their chosen field.
The House Officer Affairs program is overseen by faculty members Drs. Jamie Burkitt and Amandine Lejeune, working closely with chief house officers who serve as representatives and advocates for all UC Davis SVM house officers.
This week, the incoming group is participating in a three-day orientation to familiarize themselves with the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) and broader campus resources. The orientation includes introductions to hospital leadership, faculty mentors, fellow house officers, and a welcome mixer supported by Hill’s Pet Nutrition. Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet Dean Mark Stetter.
After orientation, house officers will begin their clinical rotations at the VMTH and affiliated training sites including the Sacramento Zoo, San Diego Zoo, San Diego Safari Park, California Animal Health & Food Safety Laboratory, Wildlife Health Center, California National Primate Research Center, Veterinary Medicine Teaching and Research Center, and the Marine Mammal Center.
