Officials Investigate Reports of Illness in Dogs After Walks Near Venice, California

Health officials are investigating reports of dogs developing serious illness after walking near the Venice Canals in the past week. Multiple dogs have reportedly shown severe symptoms, and some cases have resulted in fatalities.

Los Angeles Animal Services announced Monday that it had been alerted to the situation by Los Angeles County Veterinary Public Health (VPH). The affected dogs, ranging from young to senior, were reportedly in good health before exhibiting symptoms such as seizures, weakness, and, in some cases, cardiac arrest. According to officials, the dogs come from different households.

One couple, John and Taylor, reported the sudden death of their 1-year-old Golden Retriever, Ginger. They said she appeared healthy before they left for dinner and had been walked near the canals three times earlier that day.

Veterinary officials have not yet determined a specific cause for the illnesses. VPH is requesting that pet owners whose dogs have shown similar symptoms submit a report along with the dog’s medical history through an online form to assist in the investigation.

While the source remains unknown, Los Angeles Animal Services advises pet owners to supervise their pets closely while outdoors and to use short leashes to minimize the risk of exposure to potential toxins.
