Celebrating Excellence and Equity: NABV’s Fifth Annual Conference & Gala in New Orleans

The National Association for Black Veterinarians (NABV) hosted its Fifth Annual Conference and Scholarship Gala from June 5 to June 7, 2025, at the JW Marriott in New Orleans. This landmark event brought together veterinary professionals, students, industry leaders, and changemakers from across the country for three days of knowledge sharing, networking, and celebration.

The conference served as a powerful reminder of the importance of diversity and representation in veterinary medicine, while also spotlighting innovation, community engagement, and career development within the profession.

A Welcome from the Crescent City

Set in the heart of New Orleans, the JW Marriott provided a dynamic and elegant setting for this year’s event. The conference seamlessly blended professional development with cultural immersion, offering attendees a chance to explore the city’s historic charm, rich traditions, and world-renowned hospitality.

The vibrant atmosphere of New Orleans extended beyond the venue’s walls—attendees enjoyed local cuisine, live music, and curated cultural experiences that reinforced the community spirit at the heart of NABV’s mission.

A Keynote to Remember

One of the highlights of the weekend was the keynote address by Dr. Robert Livingston, Harvard social psychologist and expert in diversity, equity, and inclusion. Drawing from his award-winning research and widely recognized article, “How to Promote Racial Equity in the Workplace,” Dr. Livingston delivered a thought-provoking talk on systemic challenges and practical pathways to create truly inclusive professional environments. His message resonated deeply, offering both inspiration and actionable strategies for veterinary leaders.

Educational Sessions that Sparked Change

The conference featured a robust lineup of educational sessions, with topics ranging from cutting-edge medical advances to practical tools for building inclusive practices. A few standout sessions included:

  • Innovations in Veterinary Medicine: Exploring emerging treatments and technologies shaping the future of animal care.

  • Diversity in Veterinary Practice: Addressing systemic barriers and promoting representation across all levels of the profession.

  • Community Engagement Strategies: Encouraging veterinarians to foster stronger ties and trust with the communities they serve.

Each session emphasized NABV’s core values: equity, leadership, and excellence.

Powerful Networking, Meaningful Mentorship

Beyond the lecture halls, the NABV conference delivered unmatched opportunities for professional connection. From casual mixers to the highly anticipated Industry Speed Networking session, attendees forged lasting relationships and explored new partnerships. The growing presence of veterinary students and early-career professionals made this year’s event a testament to NABV’s ongoing investment in the next generation of leaders.

Showcasing Innovation and Impact

The exhibit hall buzzed with energy as sponsors, organizations, and innovators showcased groundbreaking products and services—from diagnostic tools to educational platforms. The Innovation Showcase stood out as a hub of creativity, featuring practical solutions designed to meet the needs of veterinarians serving underrepresented communities.

A Celebration of Heritage and Progress

True to the spirit of New Orleans, the conference embraced celebration as much as education. Evening receptions and gala events offered attendees a moment to relax, reflect, and honor achievements within the Black veterinary community. It was a powerful reminder that progress is not only professional—it is personal and collective.
