NC State Vet Student Dasia Harris is Breaking Barriers in Veterinary Medicine—One Honest Post at a Time

As a second-year student at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine, Dasia Harris is doing more than pursuing her DVM—she’s using her platform to rewrite the story of who belongs in the profession.

Born and raised in South Hill, Virginia, and shaped by a military upbringing, Dasia brings both grit and grace to her veterinary journey. Whether she’s in the clinic, the classroom, or creating content for her thousands of followers on Instagram and TikTok, Dasia’s mission is clear: lead with purpose, stay real, and make space for others.

“I believe my mission in life is to show people that no matter what your background is or how you were raised, you can still achieve anything you want,” Dasia said. “Success doesn’t mean fitting a mold. It means breaking it—and helping others do the same.”

Balancing Vet School and Military Service

While most students are juggling lectures and labs, Dasia adds military service to the mix, serving in the reserves. She once considered going active duty full-time, but her calling to veterinary medicine proved too strong. Still, the structure and discipline of her military background shape how she approaches both her studies and her advocacy.

A Passion for Exotics, Surgery—and Representation

Dasia’s interests span small animal and exotic medicine to surgery, and she’s driven by a desire to give back to underserved communities. As the Student Diversity & Inclusion Chair for her class and a Heartland Veterinary Partners Student Ambassador, she’s vocal about increasing access and representation in veterinary spaces.

She’s not afraid to be candid either. Through short videos, real-talk captions, and behind-the-scenes glimpses of vet life, Dasia connects with pre-vet students and fellow future DVMs in ways that feel authentic and deeply human.

Wisdom Beyond the White Coat

Her biggest influence? Her little sister, Destiny. “She reminds me to stay soft, stay curious, and always keep imagining,” Dasia shared.

The best career advice she’s ever received? “It’s better to start something than to never start at all.”

That mindset helped her overcome self-doubt when she entered vet school later than some peers. Now, she uses her platform to reassure others: “Everyone has their own timeline. Life will make space for what’s meant for you.”

What’s Next for Dasia Harris?

With resilience, curiosity, and authenticity as her guideposts, Dasia Harris is on a mission to improve animal care—and to make the veterinary world a more welcoming place for everyone. She’s not waiting to be a doctor to start making a difference. She’s doing it now.
