How AI is Changing Sediment Analysis: Zoetis to Reveal New Findings at ACVIM 2025
Zoetis Inc., a major player in animal health, will showcase new research on its Vetscan Imagyst® AI-powered Urine Sediment Analysis at the upcoming ACVIM Forum in Louisville, Kentucky, June 19-21, 2025. The company is hosting two poster sessions highlighting how their artificial intelligence compares to expert veterinary clinical pathologists in detecting urine sediment elements.
Vetscan Imagyst uses advanced deep learning algorithms to analyze around 1,000 microscopic fields in fresh urine samples, delivering quick and consistent results in minutes. This technology aims to help veterinarians make faster, more informed treatment decisions through detailed sediment evaluations.
Dr. Cory Penn, Head of Global Diagnostics Portfolio Support at Zoetis, explained, “Urinalysis remains a cornerstone of veterinary diagnostics. Our AI tool is designed to simplify and standardize sediment analysis, helping clinics streamline workflows without sacrificing accuracy.”
Urine sediment examination is crucial for identifying red and white blood cells, crystals, bacteria, and casts—key indicators in diagnosing urinary tract diseases and other hidden health issues.
The AI’s deep learning system utilizes multiple image filters and a convolutional neural network to improve identification of subtle sediment features that can be challenging to spot.
As part of Zoetis’ broader diagnostics portfolio, Vetscan Imagyst connects veterinarians with expert clinical pathologists for advanced digital cytology reviews and additional expert analysis. The Zoetis Virtual Laboratory also offers access to board-certified specialists globally.
Zoetis will present two scientific abstracts at ACVIM 2025, covering the effectiveness of their AI algorithm on common and less common urine sediment elements in canine and feline samples. The presentations will take place on June 19, 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM ET at the Kentucky International Convention Center.
In addition, Zoetis’ Global Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Richard Goldstein, will discuss recent advances in canine chronic kidney disease during a session on June 20.
