From Itchy Pets to Inspired Students: Meet WVC Headliner Dr. Christina Gentry

Dermatology might not be the first specialty that comes to mind when you think “exciting veterinary career,” but Dr. Christina Gentry is here to change that perception. A board-certified veterinary dermatologist and Clinical Assistant Professor at Texas A&M University, Dr. Gentry is bringing her energy, expertise, and unique perspective to WVC Vegas 2026 as one of the conference’s headliners—so you won’t want to miss her sessions.

For Dr. Gentry, dermatology is more than just skin-deep. “It’s fun!” she says with a smile. “It combines the best parts of general practice with specialty medicine. You get regular hours, see patients multiple times a year, and really build relationships with clients. Plus, there’s problem-solving and the satisfaction of making small adjustments that have a big impact over time.”

Her journey to dermatology was anything but ordinary. After earning her DVM from Texas A&M in 2012 and completing her dermatology residency in Colorado, she spent seven years in private practice in Denver and Houston. There, she honed her skills in feline allergic skin disease, otitis, and immune-mediated conditions while delighting in teaching interns and working alongside top-notch technicians. Despite loving her work, she eventually followed her calling back to academia, returning to Texas A&M in 2023 to shape the next generation of veterinarians.

Life outside the clinic keeps her grounded. Christina balances the demands of a bustling professional life with family time—two kids, two dogs, two cats, and a supportive husband—and enjoys swimming and tending to her native plant garden. She draws energy from her home life as much as from her patients, a balance she says is essential for sustaining joy in the veterinary profession.

Her approach to success is anchored in ambition, resilience, and joy. Whether it was adding an entomology minor to a rigorous undergraduate program, navigating the challenges of mentorship, or learning to craft manuscripts for publication, Dr. Gentry has always embraced the hard work that comes with growth. “The hardest part is keeping at it in the face of disappointment,” she reflects. “But every time you fall down, you get back up—and you’re not doing it alone.”

Even her inspirations are larger than life. Growing up, she idolized Steve Irwin, a passion that foreshadowed her lifelong obsession with animals. And when it comes to navigating the pressures of veterinary medicine, she draws wisdom from Brené Brown’s The Gifts of Imperfection, reminding herself and others that perfection is not the goal—being your best self is.

Dr. Gentry also has a candid perspective on the challenges in veterinary medicine. “We put so much pressure on ourselves and others to be perfect. Giving ourselves and our colleagues a little grace could reduce stress for everyone,” she notes.

At WVC Vegas 2026, attendees will get a chance to experience Dr. Gentry’s infectious enthusiasm firsthand. Her sessions promise a mix of practical dermatology insights, relatable stories from real clinics, and a reminder that veterinary medicine can be both challenging and deeply rewarding.

Whether you’re itching to learn more about dermatology or just want to be inspired by a veterinarian who truly loves what she does, Dr. Christina Gentry is a must-see. Check her out at WVC Vegas—you might even leave with a newfound appreciation for the world of skin, fur, and everything in between.
