Help Shape the Future of Veterinary Well-Being

Veterinary medicine is a calling. We became veterinarians to care for animals, solve problems, and make a difference. But anyone in the field knows that the personal toll can be heavy. Long hours, emotionally charged cases, challenging clients, and high expectations often collide with the very real pressures of debt, life outside work, and mental health.

Yet despite the challenges, the profession has historically lacked the kind of data that could truly guide meaningful change. That’s where this study comes in.

The Hidden Stress of Veterinary Medicine

Research shows that veterinarians face mental health pressures far above the general population. Burnout, compassion fatigue, and psychological distress are not uncommon. Some sobering numbers:

  • More than 50% of veterinarians report high levels of burnout.

  • Up to 1 in 6 veterinarians has considered suicide at some point in their career.

  • Student debt often exceeds $200,000, adding financial stress to the emotional load.

Stress is not just an individual problem — it affects teams, patient care, and the long-term sustainability of the profession. But to solve it, we need your perspective.

How This Study Can Make a Difference

Dr. Gershon Alaluf, DVM, MBA, is leading a research study to understand how resilience, psychological safety, and vulnerability intersect with workplace stress in veterinary medicine. This is more than an academic exercise — it’s about creating actionable insights that can:

  • Improve mental health resources tailored specifically to veterinary professionals

  • Identify risk factors and protective strategies for stress and burnout

  • Help veterinary workplaces create safer, more supportive environments

  • Ultimately, make the profession more sustainable and rewarding

Your voice could shape programs, policies, and resources that directly affect you and your colleagues.

How You Can Participate

Participation is voluntary, confidential, and meaningful. You can:

  1. Complete a 10-minute anonymous survey on workplace stress and resilience.

  2. (Optional) Provide a short saliva sample to measure stress biomarkers.

  3. (Optional) Join a 60-minute virtual interview to share your experiences and insights.

All data will be de-identified and reported in aggregate. You can withdraw at any time without consequence.

Why It Matters

Every response adds a piece to the puzzle. Every insight can help reduce stress, improve professional well-being, and create workplaces where veterinarians can thrive. You’re not just taking a survey — you’re helping the profession become healthier, safer, and more sustainable for everyone who follows in your footsteps.
