University of Florida Leads Task Force to Combat Animal Cruelty in North Florida
The University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine, in collaboration with the State Attorney’s Offices of R.J. Larizza, Brian Kramer, and Melissa Nelson, has launched the North Florida Animal Cruelty Task Force. This initiative, covering 13 counties across North Florida, aims to strengthen the investigation and prosecution of animal cruelty crimes in the region.
The counties involved in the task force include Volusia, Flagler, St. Johns, Putnam, Baker, Bradford, Union, Levy, Gilchrist, Alachua, Duval, Clay, and Nassau.
Task Force Goals and Focus
The primary goal of this task force is to foster collaboration between law enforcement, animal services, veterinarians, and the State Attorney’s offices in order to better investigate and prosecute animal cruelty cases. According to Adam Stern, a professor of veterinary forensic pathology at UF and coordinator of the task force, the collaboration will ensure more effective outcomes. Stern also oversees the UF Veterinary Forensic Sciences Laboratory and emphasized that animal abuse investigations often face external challenges that this task force is designed to address.
“The development of this task force is a major step forward in the fight against animal cruelty,” said Stern. “It will not only enhance investigations but also provide educational training and focus resources on these unique crimes.”
The task force, which spans the fourth, seventh, and eighth judicial circuits, had its first meeting in October 2024. Key participants include agents from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, local sheriff’s offices, and animal services departments.
Educational and Investigative Support
In addition to improving investigations and prosecutions, the task force will prioritize educational initiatives aimed at enhancing the skills of those involved in animal cruelty investigations. By providing training programs, the task force seeks to equip both law enforcement and other relevant personnel with the knowledge necessary to effectively address animal cruelty issues.
State Attorney R.J. Larizza expressed strong support for the task force’s formation, stating, “Animal cruelty is a serious offense that needs to be addressed in a comprehensive way. This task force will help hold individuals accountable for their actions and protect animals from abuse.”
The North Florida Animal Cruelty Task Force represents a critical step toward ensuring that animals in North Florida receive the legal protection they deserve under state law.
