Clayton Veterinary Clinic Closes After 40 Years of Service: A Storied Career Comes to an End

After more than 40 years of providing exceptional care to pets and livestock in Northern Wisconsin, the Clayton Veterinary Clinic, led by Dr. Robert Smith, will close its doors for the final time on January 31, 2025. Dr. Smith’s remarkable journey in veterinary medicine has spanned decades, during which he cared for a variety of animals and made a significant impact on the local community.

Challenges in Finding a Successor
As Dr. Smith enters his late 60s, he’s finding it increasingly difficult to maintain the demanding workload, prompting his decision to retire. In an effort to continue the clinic’s legacy, he spent three years trying to sell the business to a new veterinarian, but his search proved unsuccessful. He even explored teaming up with veterinarians in Turtle Lake and Clear Lake in a corporation, but the deal fell through, and now he feels it’s time for him to step away.

“I’ve tried for years to find someone to take over, but it just wasn’t in the cards,” Dr. Smith said. “It’s a tough decision, but I feel it’s time for the next step in life.”

A Lifelong Commitment to Animal Care
Dr. Smith founded the clinic in 1982 with the goal of serving the dairy and large animal community, but it wasn’t long before the practice expanded to accommodate the growing needs of small animals. Over the years, the clinic grew alongside Dr. Smith’s dedication to both the community and his clients. In 1985, the clinic expanded to include a third veterinarian, and over time, it became a staple of veterinary care in the region. At the time of his retirement, the clinic had over 1,900 dogs and cats on file, along with a history of serving over 200 dairy farms, though that number has since dropped to just a handful.

“It’s been an incredible journey, and I’ve learned so much along the way,” said Dr. Smith. “When I started in 1982, the idea was to focus on dairy and large animals, and the small animal side just grew from there. I’m proud of the care we’ve provided for animals and the relationships we’ve built with their owners.”

A Veterinarian with Extensive Experience
Dr. Smith’s education and skills have always set him apart. After earning his undergraduate degree from River Falls, he went on to receive his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia. His commitment to advancing his knowledge continued through the years, including gaining post-doctorate certification in fish veterinary medicine. In the early 2000s, Dr. Smith became the only private practice veterinarian in the northern half of Wisconsin with federal certification for fish farming, covering half of Wisconsin and all of Minnesota. This rare expertise added an even greater layer of distinction to his already celebrated career.

A Love for Animals
Despite the challenges, Dr. Smith’s love for animals and his work is undeniable. He fondly recalls the many pets he’s cared for, often recognizing them before their owners. The clinic became a vital part of the Clayton community, attracting clients not just from local areas but also from far beyond.

“The pandemic really opened up opportunities for us. People were coming from Minnesota to Wisconsin for veterinary care, and many of them have continued to stay with us even after things returned to normal,” Dr. Smith shared. “It’s rewarding to know we’ve made such an impact on their lives and the lives of their pets.”

Though the clinic will close at the end of January, the legacy of Dr. Robert Smith and his commitment to the animals he cared for will not soon be forgotten by the community.
