Game-Changer Alert: AABP Unveils Groundbreaking Guidelines for Veterinary Technicians in Bovine Practice

In a move set to revolutionize bovine veterinary care, the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) has rolled out a set of groundbreaking guidelines aimed at maximizing the role of credentialed veterinary technicians (CVTs) in bovine practice.

The guidelines, aptly titled "AABP Guideline for Credentialed Veterinary Technicians in Bovine Practice," aim to clarify the definition of a CVT and underscore the importance of their specialized training and education. According to Dr. James Bennett, who chaired the AABP CVT Task Force responsible for crafting the guidelines, distinguishing CVTs from veterinary assistants is crucial, as CVTs are required to complete continuing education for licensure.

Dr. Michael Capel, President of AABP, emphasizes the evidence-based approach of the guidelines, which are designed to ensure best management practices for working with cattle while safeguarding animal welfare. The guidelines provide a roadmap for veterinarians to expand the delegation of tasks to CVTs, thus enhancing practice efficiency and client care.

Dr. Fred Gingrich, Executive Director of AABP, highlights the importance of engaging CVTs in bovine practice to improve efficiency and allow veterinarians to focus on tasks only they can perform. The guidelines outline an extensive task list, delineating the supervision level required for each task and emphasizing adherence to state, provincial, and federal regulations.

Ultimately, the new guidelines represent a significant step forward for bovine practitioners, empowering them to leverage the skills and expertise of CVTs to provide optimal care for beef and dairy farm clients. With these guidelines in hand, the veterinary community is poised to unlock new possibilities in bovine practice and enhance the overall standard of care for cattle nationwide.

AABP guidelines and position statements are publicly available on the AABP website at www.aabp.org under the About tab. CVT guidelines are at http://aabp.org/resources/AABP_Guidelines/VetTech2024.pdf.
