Presumptive tick paralysis in two miniature horses

Two American Miniature horses were examined for progressive weakness and recumbency. Numerous Dermacentor variabilis ticks were found on both. One of the orses was recumbenton presentation and the other was ataxic but able to stand. Both horses had decreased tongue and tail muscle tone but normal spinal reflexes.

The ticks were removed and both horses were neurologically normal within 48 hours.
